IIT Guwahati alumni · San Francisco Bay Area

Every Diwali, Guwahati takes the stage.

For almost two decades, IIT Guwahati alumni in the Bay Area have spent their autumns rehearsing for Diwali Dhamaka, the IIT alumni Diwali show. These are our stages, our skits and our Diwalis.

The tradition

What is Diwali Dhamaka?

Every year, alumni of the IITs in the Bay Area put on one big show for Diwali. Each campus brings its own performance, usually a skit stitched together with music, dance and comedy, and the campuses compete, in the friendliest way, for the evening's awards.

The order is drawn by lot on the day. Families fill the theatre in their Diwali best. And for weeks before, office conference rooms and living rooms across the Bay Area turn into rehearsal halls.

Our part in it

Where IIT Guwahati comes in

IIT Guwahati, the sixth IIT, opened in 1994 on the north bank of the Brahmaputra. Its alumni have been on the Dhamaka stage since at least 2008, writing skits that poke fun at politics, the news and ourselves.

Over the years the cast has grown to include whole families, and more and more of our kids. The show paused after 2019 and came back in 2025. So did we.
